The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

leave a comment »

The trailer for Terry Gilliam’s ‘The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus’ was released online a few days ago. The film was initially shot with Heath Ledger in the lead but as Ledger passed away while only one third of the film was shot, Gilliam had him replaced with Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell, all three starring as Ledger’s character at different intervals in the fantasy world created by Dr. Parnassus. Trailer looks promising, take a peek. Release date is approx. end of October.

Charlotte Gainsbourg ‘IRM’

leave a comment »

Charlotte Gainsbourg’s latest album should see a release in January 2010. Titled ‘IRM’ (which is MRI in french), the album is produced by Beck. The strange album title is in fact a reference to Charlotte’s frequent experiences with MRI’s after suffering a brain hemorrhage back in 2007 through a water-skiing accident.

Watch the teaser video, where Gainsbourg explains the whole phenomena, and beck talks about his involvement in the album too.

Takashi Murakami X Kirsten Dunst

Contemporary Japanese artist Takashi Murakami recently completed a video project in collaboration with actress Kirsten Dunst and film director, McG. The video art sees Kirsten Dunst dressed up in a Japanese princess outfit and singing a cover of the vapors song ‘Turning Japanese’ around the streets of Akihabara in Tokyo. I haven’t seen the footage yet but apparently it will be available on the web in the coming weeks. Interesting. I’m intrigued.

Sofia Coppola’s ‘Lick The Star’

While Sofia Coppola’s new film ‘Somewhere’ is locked in post-production and there doesn’t seem to be any leaks on footage or a trailer at the moment, I thought I might post up footage from one of her earlier films. Before ‘The Virgin Suicides’, Coppola directed a black and white 14 minute short titled ‘Lick The Star’, shot by Lance Accord.

Korine’s ‘Stuck’

I was piling through MJZ’s archive the other night and found this commercial that Harmony Korine had shot for Thornton’s back in 2008 when he had just signed with MJZ for commercial representation. An interesting piece of work from the indie filmmaker who directed ‘Gummo’ and more recently ‘Mister Lonely’ as well as writing scripts for ‘Kids’ and ‘Ken Park’.

Juergen Teller In Conversation

leave a comment »

Ever since my wife introduced me to his photography 5 years ago, I have been obsessed with his work. And I think a part of the appeal was in Teller’s ability to produce work that can is admired from a commercial point of view e.g. his Marc Jacob advertising campaigns and also at the same time from a artistic point of view. Ultimately there’s a thin line between the two for him because over the years he’s been able to gain the trust of commercial partners such as Marc Jacobs to produce breakthrough work on a commercial platform. Every time I see a new campaign that he’s been involved in I am stunned. He doesn’t pretend to layer his work with conspicuous sophistication nor does he need to. His photography is striking from the get go.

On the 12th September Juergen Teller was invited for a conversation with Cathy Horyn of The New York Times at the School of Visual Arts NYC. Check out the video.

Kid Koala is back with his latest project ‘The Slew’. On tour through September and October in North America, he’s taken 6 turntables, 2 Rane Empath mixers, Radial Duplex DIs and an old Fender PA100 with two 4 x 8″ speaker columns, oh and he’s brought along Chris Ross and Myles Heskett (ex-Wolfmother) on bass and drums for the shows. The album should see an official release in the next couple of months. Check out the video for The Slew’s ‘It’s all over’.

Moonmilk

Fresh from having his solo show opening at the Alison Jacques gallery in London, Morel publishing have released Ryan McGinley’s latest works as a book. McGinley’s latest work includes 24 new colour photographs based on the title of his show ‘moonmilk’. Exploring and using unfamiliar spaces such as caves as the landscape and plotting his models right in the thick of his mise en scene. While he took the art world by storm in 1998 by taking snapshots of his friends in the lower east side of New York, ‘moonmilk’ like his last work ‘I know where the summer goes’ shows evidence that he has evolved his style to a point where he now creates the scene rather than simply catching the moment and the results are quite inspiring. The show’s on until the 8th October.

Alison Jacques Gallery
16-18 Berners Street, London

For those that aren’t in London, check out ‘Moonmilk’ online here.

I was quite excited when I found out Tim Burton was directing ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Check out the teaser trailer, this film promises to be a crazy trip. With a worldwide release date of March 2010, you’re going to have sit on your ass a little while longer before you can take the red pill.
